DIY Home-made Sugar Scrub

For those who've been attending my DIY Masterclasses lately (which are so fun), it's where we get the opportunity to play with your existing essential oils and ensure you're using them confidently and safely, we also play with over 60 other oils and we get our hands dirty, blending and making DIY natural skin care serums, skin toners, natural perfumes, body scrubs and antiseptic multipurpose bench spray, that you get to take home! If you want to know when the next Masterclass is on, or you want me to come to your pad for your own Masterclass touch base with me here

One of my latest obsessions that everyone in these classes is falling head over heels in love with is Grapefruit essential oil. Grapefruit oil comes from the rind of the fruit and contains up to 95% of a potent constituent, limonene, which is well-known for it's cleansing properties; it's incredible to support cleansing and liver detoxification, support fluid retention symptoms and externally it works to cleanse bench tops and mop the floors

Grapefruit is the oil of honouring the body; it's all about loving and respecting your body. It's the must-have oil if you get judgy of your body weight, focus on certain areas that you want to change, unconsciously practice negative self talk and are motivated by any disgust or resentment towards yourself.

Grapefruit essential oil also:

  • helps curb sugar cravings
  • supports weight management
  • decreases fluid retention (a must-have when flying)
  • supports healthy cholesterol levels
  • stabilises mood
  • fights inflammation
    • Can be used for hangover symptomsYou can enjoy a drop of grapefruit essential oil in a glass of water upon rising or add a few drops to your diffuser.  To use as a cleaning product I add 15 drops of grapefruit and 15 drops of tea tree in a 200ml spray bottle filled with water.

A hormone-balancing and hydrating home-made body scrub that will literally change your life is made with sugar, coconut oil, grapefruit essential oil and geranium essential oil. As you rub it on you're honouring your body, literally. Read all about Geranium here

This body scrub is 4 ingredients, easy to do and costs next to nothing. Just one drop of Grapefruit essential oil costs 8c, and one drop of Geranium essential oil costs 15cents, making the total cost of this body scrub less than $3! Such an easy Mothers Day, birthday, christmas and anytime gift, that's made with love!

What's the LRP and POM?

There's some new lingo when you start using and loving doTERRA's essential oils and products. I want to be really clear what the Loyalty Rewards Program (LRP) is and why you'll love it, what Product of the Month (POM) means and how to get it and cover the monthly specials.

As a Wellness Advocate you've got a wholesale account, which means you get 25% off the RRP! Beyond that, you get further discounts and freebies, including monthly specials and a free product of the month for all LRP orders over 125PV that are placed before the 15th of the month.

Find out this month's specials and POM here

Click here to watch a video that explains LRP

What is LRP?

There's a Loyalty Rewards Program that doTERRA gift Wholesale Account owners, which is a free and voluntary program that rewards you with points, each time you make a doTERRA purchase. This means you accrue points to buy new oils/products free! It works a bit like a Frequent Flyers Program.

The most intelligent and economic way to build your oils collection over time is to participate in the LRP, and make monthly orders, rather than doing big lump sum orders every so often. When you fall in love with oils it can be tempting to buy lots all at once, but you're better off slowly and affordably building your collection over time with the LRP program.

There's no minimum spend or automatic shipping that you don't have control over. You can cancel anytime by contacting doTERRA Member Services.

Set up your LRP order between the 2nd - 15th of the month in order to receive doTERRA's free product of the month

What's PV?

A: PV = Personal Volume. Each product has been assigned a PV.

This is because doTERRA essential oil are purchased from customers all over the world and therefore costs different prices in different countries. However, the PV of essential oils is the same world wide. For example, Wild Orange essential oil is $10.50 in the US and is $14.50 in Aus, but the PV is the same world wide, it's 12.50PV.

How does LRP work?

You can spend as little as $5 or $500 a month - it's up to you, depending on your health needs, your wants and your budget!

Each month you accrue rewards points, which you can spend the following month to buy free oils or you can save and accrue your points. If you place a minimum of 50PV each month you will continue to earn back more points, eventually after 13 months earning back 30% of PV points. For example, if you spend 100 PV you will earn back 30 PV, for free!

If you spend 1-50 PV per month you will maintain you rewards %, for example if at 5 months you place a 10PV order, you will continue to earn back 15% of PV points.

Make sense? Essentially, every 3 months you participate in LRP you earn back an additional 5%, until you earn back 30% of PV after 13+ months. To do this, each month you need to place an order of 50PV +. If you place an order between 1-50PV you'll maintain you rewards credit %.

What's Product of the Month?

Product of the Month (POM) is a monthly special that is included in all LRP orders over 125PV that are placed before the 15th of the month. DoTERRA gift you the product of the month, which is often valued between $20-$50. It's a great way to build up your essential oils/products collection, try new oils and replace exisiting oils/products.

So, when you purchase doTERRA products, your PV increases. When your PV reaches 125 on your Loyalty Rewards order, the product of the month will be automatically added onto your LRP order. Hence, you get a freebie!

Here's the steps to setting up your LRP:

Here's what you want to do to set up your LRP...

  • Log in to your own doTERRA account here: http://mydoterra.com/
  • User your username, which is your Wellness Advocate ID or IPC number, which you would have received in your welcome email from doTERRA. If you can't find it get in contact with the lovely doTERRA advocate that signed you up!
  • Place an order between the 2nd-15th of the month that is over 125PV. The POM will automatically be included in your order!

13 Ways We Use Essential Oils Every Day

If you've ordered your essentials oils and you're thinking, well how do I get cracking with all of these, or you're stuck in a rut of using the same few oils day-in, day-out, it's time to open your mind and your diffuser, and get busy experiencing all the uses, properties and magic of your oils.

I've thrown together a list of 13 ways we use essential oils every day in my house. I tried to keep the list nice and succinct with 10 ways we use oils, but I just couldn't. So here's my list of 13 ways we bust out our oils...

13 ways we use essential oils every day in my house:

1. Fire up your metabolism & kick start digestion with Lemon or Wild Orange. Just one drop added in to a glass of water upon rising can support metabolism, digestion and aid detoxification pathways. Hot tip: Adding a drop in to a glass of sparkling water is the perfect mocktail.

2. Energising and invigorating oils/blends to lift your mood and support learning. My fave morning blends in the diffuser:

  • A citrus oil like lemon (aka The Oil of Focus), wild orange, lemongrass or red mandarin (my latest obsession) and peppermint.
  • Elevation aka Joyful Blend, is a doTERRA blend, which includes tangerine, lemon myrtle, melissa, lavender etc, is fantastic in the morning to lift your mood!

3. Calm with Frankincense. Known as a balancing and grounding oil it’s the perfect antidote for chaos and that 3pm slump. Diffuse it (it’s great blended with Lavender) and try applying to temples, back of neck or soles of feet.

  • Balance - a doTERRA blend, that has Spruce, Frankincense, Chamomile, Blue Tansy and Ho Wood. It's such a masculine, ground and calming blend. It's heaven.

4. Improve sleep. Think Lavender, Lavender, Lavender. Lavender stimulates the pineal gland, which produces melatonin, a sleep hormone!!!

My munchkins have their own Lavender roller bottle that I make up (always dilute safely - 1 drop of Lavender essential oil for 10mls of carrier oil for children is safe dilution), applied to soles of feet, chest and wrists before bed. They absolutely love it.

Diffuser blends to support sleep:

  • To support sleep for those with a tendency for anxiety and restlessness: Lavender and Easy Aid
  • To support sleep for those with issues falling or staying asleep: Lavender, Frankincense and Vetiver. Vetiver is a natural tranquiliser, and can induce a restful sleep
  • To support sleep for those with sinus congestion, allergies and colds: Lavender, Easy Air and On Guard

5. Give your immune system a hug. You can try popping a few drops of On Guard in the diffuser and do this weekly to support immunity. This is particularly useful in cold/flu season, if you're juggling a hectic schedule and if you have any little ones attending day care, and they come home as constant snot balls. Remember, On Guard contains a blend of anti-oxidant and immune supportive essential oils, including Clove oil, which is antibacterial and anti-fungal. It's also one of the highest sources of antioxidants in the world!

In fact, clove essential oil has 50 X more antioxidants than blueberries!

6. Switch to low toxicity cleaning options (without spending a fortune!) In a 200ml spray bottle add in 15 drops of Lemon and 15 drops of On Guard and fill the rest up with water. This is what I use to clean tables, bench tops, bathroom sinks, etc. For a lot of grim and dirt I might add in a few extra drops of Oregano.

7. Make your own soothing and hydrating body moisturiser

My fave blend (you’ll see it’s best to use 3 oils; a citrus, wood and floral scent):

  • Lemon/Wild Orange with Frankincense and Lavender
  • Lemongrass with Frankincense and Geranium
  • Grapefruit with Frankincense and Patchouli

8. Manage sore muscles or shoulder tension: Using Ice blue diluted and massaged to area of soreness, to help manage inflammation and pain, and improve mobility.

9. Peppermint/Wild Orange: can be used as flavouring in smoothies, protein balls or healthy desserts. doTERRA's essential oils are approved as food safe in Australia (check each doTERRA bottle, which tells you if the oil is safe for ingestion).

10. Switch to a natural perfume. Whisper is my favourite. It’s a blend by doTERRA and it smells like you've walked in to a lolly shop from your childhood. It smells just like musk sticks. If you’re not in to the sweet lolly smell you can try something more grounding like Frankincense with Lavender.

11. Manage sugar cravings - a drop of Lemon or Smart and Sassy in a glass of water or cuppa tea when sugar cravings hit is useful. Smart and Sassy is called the Metabolic blend, as it’s got a blend of oils (Lemon, Grapefruit, Peppermint, Ginger and Cinnamon), to manage sugar cravings and promote a healthy metabolism.

12. Ditch coffee for the morning pick-me-up, and say hello to Peppermint – it’ll pep you up with its invigorating properties. It’s great to use just before exercising to enhance performance.

13. Herbs and spices in cooking - If I've only got limp and old looking herbs in the fridge, which happens too often in my case, I'll add in ONE drop (only) of Oregano, Lemon, Basil or Cumin in to snacks like hummus or in to the evening meal, such as stew, casserole, rice, Bolognese sauce, etc. to flavour the meal. It’s delicious, cheap, effective and healthy!

Note: when applying any oils topically always do so safely using the dilution chart here

USING ESSENTIAL OILS SAFELY

How To Use Essential Oils Safely

My 3 year-old son can be overly cautious at times.  He's like the OH & S officer around the house.  He tells me when the toilet paper is low or a light globe is gone.  He's very quick to comment on the mess (that he has made, I might add!) He's like my hubby; sticks to the rules, likes order and is a bit of a clean-freak. I am the opposite; a bit slap-dash and a lover of ordered chaos. That is, except when it comes to using natural medicine.  As a Naturopath and Herbalist, I have incredible respect for conventional and complementary medicine; natural medicine, like herbs, essential oils and supplements, are powerful, and must be used safely.

When you use essential oils, do it creatively and intuitively, but also safely. Essential oils pack a punch. They are potent and very effective in small amounts.

1 drop of peppermint essential oil = 28 cups of peppermint tea

Remember, essential oils are fast acting! They take 22 seconds to reach the brain, within 2 minutes they are found in the bloodstream and by 20 minutes they affect every cell in your body.

With this in mind, you're better off to use small amounts of essential oils throughout the day rather than a one-off.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS:

1. Aromatically: Using a diffuser or inhaling them. Not all diffusers are created equal - get a good quality nebulizing diffuser like the doTERRA petal diffuser

2. You can add SOME essential oils to your cooking/foods for flavouring

Some of the most popular oils for adding to your foods (believe me, you only need ONE drop to get the taste), includes: Lemon, Peppermint, Wild Orange, Lemongrass, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Coriander and Basil. These will literally transform your cooking and take your meals to the next level. You're welcome, by the way.

3. Topically: You can dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, this is an oil that carries the essential oil and allows the oil to easily penetrate the skin, like coconut oil, jojoba oil or macadamia nut oil, and within 2 minutes the essential oils are found in the blood stream. This is a quick and easy way to benefit from oils, especially with kiddies.

Hot tip: I often apply diluted essential oils to the bottom of the feet, as there's thousands of little blood vessels there, and the oils enter the blood stream within 30 seconds.

For adults, safe dilution = 2mls of carrier oil and 1 drop of essential oil

Here's a dilution chart from Food Alchemy:
