USING ESSENTIAL OILS SAFELY

How To Use Essential Oils Safely

My 3 year-old son can be overly cautious at times.  He's like the OH & S officer around the house.  He tells me when the toilet paper is low or a light globe is gone.  He's very quick to comment on the mess (that he has made, I might add!) He's like my hubby; sticks to the rules, likes order and is a bit of a clean-freak. I am the opposite; a bit slap-dash and a lover of ordered chaos. That is, except when it comes to using natural medicine.  As a Naturopath and Herbalist, I have incredible respect for conventional and complementary medicine; natural medicine, like herbs, essential oils and supplements, are powerful, and must be used safely.

When you use essential oils, do it creatively and intuitively, but also safely. Essential oils pack a punch. They are potent and very effective in small amounts.

1 drop of peppermint essential oil = 28 cups of peppermint tea

Remember, essential oils are fast acting! They take 22 seconds to reach the brain, within 2 minutes they are found in the bloodstream and by 20 minutes they affect every cell in your body.

With this in mind, you're better off to use small amounts of essential oils throughout the day rather than a one-off.

DIFFERENT WAYS TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS:

1. Aromatically: Using a diffuser or inhaling them. Not all diffusers are created equal - get a good quality nebulizing diffuser like the doTERRA petal diffuser

2. You can add SOME essential oils to your cooking/foods for flavouring

Some of the most popular oils for adding to your foods (believe me, you only need ONE drop to get the taste), includes: Lemon, Peppermint, Wild Orange, Lemongrass, Cinnamon, Black Pepper, Coriander and Basil. These will literally transform your cooking and take your meals to the next level. You're welcome, by the way.

3. Topically: You can dilute an essential oil with a carrier oil, this is an oil that carries the essential oil and allows the oil to easily penetrate the skin, like coconut oil, jojoba oil or macadamia nut oil, and within 2 minutes the essential oils are found in the blood stream. This is a quick and easy way to benefit from oils, especially with kiddies.

Hot tip: I often apply diluted essential oils to the bottom of the feet, as there's thousands of little blood vessels there, and the oils enter the blood stream within 30 seconds.

For adults, safe dilution = 2mls of carrier oil and 1 drop of essential oil
