4 Essential Oils to Balance Hormones

How often do you feel a sense of overwhelm, or you go to bed at night at and there’s constant mind chatter and tomorrow’s to-do list is on repeat in your head? Most of us are in ‘fight-or-flight’ and in that stressed response throughout the day and well into the evening. 90% of visits to the GP are stress related, so it’s no wonder we’re experiencing an increasing number of stress related conditions, including gut dysfunction, IBS, auto-immune diseases, anxiety, depression, reproductive issues and sleep issues.

If you’re in constant state of stress or anxiety you throw your body out of balance, as instead of cortisol serving us by regulating our blood sugar levels, responding to stress and supporting healthy blood pressure, you’ll experience signs and symptoms of high cortisol levels and adrenal fatigue.

High cortisol levels:

  • Slows digestion, often bloating and irregular bowel movements occur

  • Causes irregular blood sugar levels

  • Contributes to weight gain, especially around the middle

  • Causes sleeping issues - issues falling asleep, and staying asleep and tired upon waking

  • Causes/exacerbates anxiety and depression

  • Linked to brain fog

  • Causes fatigue

  • Contributes to irregular cycle, PMT or fertility issues: High cortisol can lead to low progesterone, which is needed for ovulation and healthy mood

  • Drives inflammatory conditions including auto-immune disease

There’s lots of ways to naturally balance hormones; particularly reducing cortisol levels, promoting healthy progesterone levels, supporting healthy thyroid and sleep hormones. Some of the most natural ways to balance hormones is to eat an anti-inflammatory and gut restorative diet (lots and lots of veggies - your goal is 6 serves per day, which = 6 cups per day for an adult), supplementing with vitamins and minerals including magnesium, zinc and omega 3, using adaptogenic herbs like Licorice , moving your body, meditation, just good old fashioned mindful breathing, and using essential oils.

Let’s just focus on essential oils right now. doTERRA’s essential oils are safe, effective and natural solutions to balancing stress hormones, supporting sleep, supporting a healthy metabolism and promoting healthy blood pressure. They’re also something you can do everyday as part of your wellness and self-love ritual. You don’t have to stock up on them at the chemist or health food store.

There’s 4 key essential oils that are inflammatory, hormone balancing, mood supportive and grounding oils, including Clary Sage, Lavender, Frankincense and Sandalwood.

It’s there. It’s in medical journals. We know the effectiveness of essential oils on managing hormones. For example, a 2014 study published in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research found that inhalation of clary sage essential oil reduced cortisol levels by 36%.
