What are Essential Oils - what's all the fuss about?
Essential oils aren’t just for hippes, sitting cross-legged in a grass field, singing kumbaya, or the new-aged hipsters, drinking kale smoothies.
They’re not a new thing. They’ve been around for thousands and thousands of years. Essential oils are documented in our history, even the bible references Frankincense, the holy oil, numerous times.
We’ve always known the power of essential oils. I think they’re being respected and understood more deeply and in a world that is fast-paced where a lot of us experience fatigue, mood swings, poor sleep, immune dysfunction, hormone imbalance etc. we are turning to natural and effective ways to empower ourselves, our families and homes.
Essential oils are highly volatile compounds, produced naturally from plants. Essential oils act as the army for plants; their job is to fight threats, infection and inflammation, like warding off pests and fighting disease. Similarly, they can support us, as human beings. doTERRA essential oils pack a punch.
1 drop of Peppermint essential oil = 28 cups of peppermint tea!
You can imagine how quickly a drop of Peppermint tea in a glass of water or applied topically, can soothe an irritated or bloated tummy, right?!
These oils are incredibly useful and versatile for managing the daily grind, high stress, anxiety, poor sleep and a busy lifestyle. How do they do this, you ask? Let me get my science nerd on and walk you through it. When you breathe in an essential oil, it hits the amygdala in the brain, in 22 seconds. The amygdala is known as the emotional control centre; it governs emotions, regulates hormones, memory, regulates blood pressure etc. So, breathing in an oil like Lavender can calm the farm and help manage stress levels, in less than half a minute. Amazing, right?! Furthermore, essential oils can ease bloating and discomfort, aid digestion, support a healthy immune system and support healthy hormones.
Here's a few of my favourite essential oils:
Lavender - the oil of honest communication and expression. Try not to think off the funky potpurri smell from childhood or your Grandma's house. Think of real, pure, floral lavender. This little baby has a calming effect on the nervous system and supports sleep (making it a mothers go-to, trust me!) . It contains linalool, a soothing element, with anti-anxiety properties, making it very useful in times of stress, anxiety, hyperactivity and insomnia. Also useful for healthy skin.
Peppermint - the oil of a buoyant heart. It's your new morning fix. Move aside coffee... maybe. This oil can lift you up, increase your energy, improve oxygen uptake - amazing for respiratory health and before moving your body and it’s an oil to sharpen your mind and improve focus
Lemon - the oil of focus; very useful for studying, working, etc. It is a strong antioxidant, providing immune support and can lift your mood. It also supports a healthy metabolism. As well as being a powerful cleanser internally, it does the same externally - you can use lemon as a natural DIY cleaner and purifier around the house (think cleaning your bench top, mopping the floor etc. instead of highly toxic standard cleaners). I throw 15 drops of Lemon with 150mls of water and voila… a Multipurpose Antiseptic Kitchen Spray is ready to go!
